Background of the study
Church-sponsored health programs have emerged as significant contributors to community health improvement, particularly in areas with limited government healthcare infrastructure. In Ugep Local Government Area, Cross River State, religious organizations have initiated various maternal health programs aimed at reducing maternal mortality through awareness, preventive care, and emergency response initiatives (Okoro, 2023). These programs often integrate spiritual care with medical services, offering a unique approach that resonates with local populations. Church-sponsored initiatives have been noted for their ability to mobilize community resources, build trust, and deliver culturally sensitive health education (Ibrahim, 2024). Over the past few years, several studies have highlighted the positive outcomes of such programs in terms of improved prenatal care, reduced complications during childbirth, and increased postnatal support (Emeka, 2025). However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited healthcare personnel, and infrastructural constraints remain. This study examines how church-sponsored health programs contribute to reducing maternal mortality in Ugep, investigating their effectiveness in addressing the multifaceted challenges of maternal health in resource-limited settings.

Statement of the problem
Despite the evident benefits of church-sponsored health programs in Ugep, maternal mortality remains a pressing concern. While these programs provide critical services, issues such as inconsistent funding, lack of specialized healthcare professionals, and limited integration with formal health systems compromise their effectiveness (Abiola, 2024). Moreover, socio-cultural factors and inadequate emergency response mechanisms further exacerbate maternal health challenges. The discrepancy between the high demand for quality maternal healthcare and the resources available through church-sponsored programs necessitates an in-depth examination of these interventions. There is a pressing need to understand the limitations of such programs in reducing maternal mortality and to identify strategies for bridging the gaps between religious health initiatives and mainstream healthcare services (Chidiebere, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of church-sponsored health programs in reducing maternal mortality.

  2. To identify challenges affecting program implementation.

  3. To propose strategies to enhance the integration of church-sponsored initiatives with formal healthcare systems.

Research questions:

  1. How do church-sponsored health programs affect maternal mortality in Ugep?

  2. What are the key challenges in implementing these programs?

  3. How can these programs be better integrated with formal healthcare services?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Church-sponsored health programs significantly reduce maternal mortality rates.

  2. Funding and resource constraints negatively impact program effectiveness.

  3. Better integration with formal healthcare improves maternal outcomes.

Significance of the study
The study is significant as it evaluates the impact of church-sponsored health programs on maternal mortality, providing critical insights for healthcare policymakers and religious organizations. The findings will guide improvements in program design and integration with formal healthcare services, ultimately aiming to enhance maternal health outcomes in resource-limited settings. This research will contribute to broader health policy debates and community-based health intervention strategies (Udo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the impact of church-sponsored health programs on maternal mortality in Ugep Local Government Area, focusing solely on the current interventions and challenges.

Definitions of terms:

  • Church-sponsored health programs: Health initiatives funded or managed by religious institutions.

  • Maternal mortality: The death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum.

  • Integration: The coordination between church-based initiatives and formal healthcare systems.
